Ovulation disorders are one of the most common causes of infertility, after fallopian tube problems and male factor infertility. At the same time, it is one of the easiest to treat.
Statistically, almost 3 in 4 couples will get pregnant within 12 months. If you have already tried to get pregnant for a year (or six months if you are over 35), you may be having an ovulation disorder factoring in to the delay. Of the couples dealing with infertility, 1 in 4 is affected by ovulation disorders, so you are definitely not alone. About 20% of couples coming to the Cyprus IVF Clinic to overcome infertility issues and get pregnant need help with ovulation disorders. Fortunately, they all leave with their hopes being rebirthed!
How Does Ovulation Occur ?
It all starts with the brain that signals the follicles containing the eggs to mature. This happens early in the menstrual cycle. Then, the dominant follicle is triggered by hormones to release an egg (also called oocyte) from one of the ovaries. At that time, the fallopian tube picks up the released egg and allows it to travel to meet the single sperm. If the egg is successfully fertilised, it heads south and gets implanted in the uterus, giving joy with the initiation of a pregnancy. In women with ovulation disorders, the development of mature follicles is extremely scarce, if at all.
By the time patients visit Cyprus IVF Clinic, they have already discovered ovulation disorders on their own, in their overwhelming majority. Irregular menstrual cycles and over-the-counter ovulation kits raise red flags to women, indicating potential issues. The same goes for basal body temperature charts.
Risk Factors for Ovulation Disorders
Ovulation disorders could coexist with PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). Body weight also plays a critical role in the development of an ovarian disorder (either being overweight or underweight), as well as experiencing extended periods of elevated stress. Finally, if your periods have become irregular, it might be a sign that calls for further investigation.
Note: There may be other underlying factors that affect fertility, which would require a fertility treatment to increase the chances of a successful pregnancy. Dr. Firdevs and Team Miracle will determine the cause and create a strictly personalised medication and treatment protocol for your case.
Where do We Begin ?
Dr. Firdevs, our world-renowned obstetrician/gynaecologist and IVF expert, also specialising in reproductive endocrinology and infertility, outlines a minimally invasive plan for assisting women with ovulation disorders to finally conceive. She will order a series of tests (urine, blood, and sonogram) that will provide her with all the necessary information in regards whether ovulation occurs, ovarian reserve, and at which stage of the ovulation process lies the problem.
Ovulation induction helps women that don’t regularly develop mature follicles in their ovaries to stimulate the development of one or even more mature follicles with the use of medication.
In most cases, fertility medications alone is enough to bring smiles to patients’ faces. Also, gonadotropins (injectable fertility medications) play a vital role in the production of eggs. Depending on the case, Dr. Firdevs may prescribe thyroid medications, too. If the fallopian tube is not blocked and there are no male factors, such as low sperm count or motility (the male partner will be asked to provide semen sample for semen analysis to determine that), pregnancy could be established with a cycle of ovulation medications and timed intercourse, in a matter of a few months.
Alongside ovulation induction, Dr. Firdevs may also suggest a more progressive option namely Intrauterine Insemination (IUI).
Timing Ovulation : A Possible Solution
For some couples, timing ovulation correctly is the solution to their problem, without having to undergo further treatment or testing. It is important women know the pattern of their menstrual cycle and which is the best time to conceive.
The first step is to start tracking your menstrual cycle (when it starts and ends) if you aren’t already doing so. Note down the days each one lasts, from the first day of the cycle till the day before your next period. Generally, ovulation starts about 15 days before the date you expect your next menstrual cycle. This means that for a woman with a 28-day cycle, day 14 is when the ovulation takes place.
Of course, there are women with irregular cycles. To help track ovulation you can monitor the basal body temperature, which usually rises by ½ a degree after ovulation. Any changes to your body (i.e. changes in the mucus of the vagina) are also indicative of ovulation. Finally, you could use an ovulation predictor kit and know that your ovulation will occur in the next 24-36 hours after a positive test result.
The 6 days before ovulation, as well as the day of the ovulation, are among your most fertile days (with the 3 days before ovulation, plus ovulation day, being the most fertile ones). Having unprotected intercourse during that period of time can increase your chances to get pregnant by almost 35%.
Although tracking ovulation can help some couples, there are infertility problems (female and male alike) that can make conception significantly difficult. In these cases, it is paramount to diagnose the most probable cause of infertility. Once the cause is determined, there are several fertility treatments with high success rates that can be offered.
At the Cyprus IVF Clinic, we have a complete range of options, including:
- IVF ( In-Vitro Fertilisation ) – If you are not getting pregnant because of underlying problems such as endometriosis, reduced ovarian reserve, and blocked fallopian tubes, IVF can certainly help you conceive and give birth to a healthy child. It can also be combined with other treatments, such as PGD ( Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis ) and allow you to both select the gender of your child and be certain you will bring a child free from genetic disorders and chromosomal abnormalities into this world.
- Egg Donation – For women with very low reserve eggs in their ovaries or patients rendered infertile due to cancer chemotherapy. We have an extensive database of pre-screened, perfectly healthy young egg donors. We harvest 10-20 eggs from the donor (10 Egg Guarantee) and fertilise them with your partner’s sperm.
- Sperm Donation – Selecting the best sperm from an exhaustive list of donors that have been pre-screened and are constantly checked for infectious diseases every 2 months might be the best option for male partners with low sperm count or low sperm quality.
- Tandem Cycle – We are the only IVF clinic that offers this treatment and is ideal for women that need to use their own eggs in conjunction with donor eggs fertilised with their partner’s sperm.
All procedures are carried out in our cutting-edge facilities and under the watchful eye of Dr. Firdevs and Team Miracle medical experts.
