Assisted Hatching and its Significance in IVF treatments

When a couple decides to have a child through IVF (In-Vitro Fertilisation), we need to implant the blastocyst – embryo almost ready to implant – successfully to the wall of the uterus. Since the blastocyst is surrounded by a protective gel-like layer (aka Zona), we must help the embryo break through the Zona and nestle nicely in the mother’s uterus. According to research, embryos created by either IVF or ICSI (Intracytoplasmic sperm injection) cannot invade the Zona themselves, and this is where we step in and provide valuable assistance in the process with a procedure known as “hatching”.

What exactly is Assisted Hatching ?

In our sophisticated laboratory at Cyprus IVF Clinic with the state-of-the-art equipment, the embryologists of Team Miracle carefully weaken the outer layer of the embryo with the use of chemicals or laser, allowing it to implant itself to the walls of the uterus. It is a procedure that demands careful handling and, of course, expertise, to be successful and takes place before the implantation process.

Is Assisted Hatching for you ?

Assisted hatching is recommended to women in their late 30s as it’s believed that the hatching process gets more difficult with age.

Other candidates for assisted hatching include women with high FSH. FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) is a very important hormone involved in a woman’s menstrual cycle and in drug-induced stimulation of the ovaries to produce mature eggs. It is also the hormone contained in injectable fertility drugs (gonadotropins) that are used for infertility treatments to help produce eggs. A woman in her menopause has low estrogen levels as she runs out of eggs. This signals the brain to produce more FSH hormone to stimulate the ovaries to produce estrogen and follicle hormone. Women with high FSH levels stop having their period, hence stop producing eggs.

Finally, women that have experienced an unsuccessful IVF cycle because the embryo did not manage to implant to the uterine walls can also benefit from assisted hatching.

How is Assisted Hatching carried out in Cyprus IVF Clinic ?

Our experts are some of the best professionals in their field, so rest assured you are in excellent hands. That said, research has shown that embryos with HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) gene are significantly less likely to be rejected by the mother’s immune system. This is mainly because this gene is a human gene, so embryos that contain it have increased chances to be accepted by the immune system of the mother. Considering that finding, we, at Cyprus IVF Clinic, test every embryo for the presence of HLA as a means to elevate its successful implantation rates.

What also raises the probability of successful implantation is the use of Embryo Glue, which is an implantation promoting embryo transfer medium that provides the embryo with valuable support during the various implantation phases.

Having a healthy pregnancy is not a far-fetched dream with Team Miracle. Our fertility professionals have both the means and necessary expertise to help you achieve your dream and start your family. Who could have ever imagined that it was that close?
